| | Edwards Patriots The fact of approximately 700 enlistments in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War by young men using the surname of Edwards is cause for us to believe they believed Edwards was their rightful name, and not a random choice made by former slaves after emancipation and wars end. It is quite likely that upwards of seven thousand African-Americans used the same surname after the war.
