| Seventeenth century religious persecution of Calvinists in France generated a lot of refugees to the American colonies of Great Britain. Calvinists were adherents to the protestant revolution in Europe against the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy; and men like John Calvin had launched a movement that attracted many people who feared and resented Catholic persecutions dating back at least to the Spanish Inquisition that forced many thousands of Jews in particular to either convert to Catholicism or flee into countries like France, Switzerland and Holland. The Huguenot sects in particular found the American southern states especially attractive for their interests and skills in enterprises such as the growing and sell of tobacco to European importers. And, there is no evidence they hesitated in moving westward from the James River areas into the Cherokee lands using the established labor sources, ... African slaves.
Indicators are that Joseph Fuqua did not father any children by his legally recognized White wife, but did have offspring by a woman of native American and/or African heritage; who subsequently gave birth to Albert Fuqua born around 1830 who is recorded as the father of Dudley Fuqua. The possibility also exists that Joseph Fuqua fathered Albert before his recorded death in 1829 at the age of 67 years. We do not know. |
