The slave trade was of such a nature that powers like Great Britain had certain territories with slave castles operated by licensed traders who were patrons to particular chieftains and market men-women for raiding hapless victim villages in a given geographic region; and, many of the slaves captured and sold at different times in places like Jamestown were obviously related.  We can speculate that Abram may well have been a cousin or even a nephew to the mother of Betty Hemings.
