Thomas Jefferson's Farmbook is a wealth of knowledge for historians about the people enslaved by him from approximately 1773 to his death in 1826, and affords considerable insight about the relationships of slaves and offspring generations such as the Hemings.

Below excerpt is provided to incite some pre-revolution era understanding as to the times of people and places familiar to Betty Hemings and her offspring. The Hemings did not exist alone or without fellowship and community with other slaves. Thomas Jefferson, his family, friends and associates were slave owners before becoming rebels against the British government; and, would remain so when their war was won.  His meticulous notes recorded in a Farm Book and Garden Book offer us an insight as to the life and times of many African-Americans owned by a man considered to be one of the better minded slave owners.

Note: TJ's roll of Negroes in Nov 1794 notes that Goliah was born around 1731.  If so, she was 12 years of age when her son Jupiter was born.  Jupiter's birth was symbolic of the degeneration of humanity anywhere by any racial or ethnic group wherein offspring are essentially of the same generation as their parent.

Note:  "Peter Jefferson left a "body servant" to each child, so Jefferson had a personal valet at age fourteen, and would have one all his life.  The role of Negro as subservient was thus further reinforced; it  became a bone-deep feeling.  Still, his affection for and dependence upon these men, especially Jupiter, who accompanied him to William and Mary, James Hemings, his valet in Paris, and Burwell, who attended him to his death, represented a special relationship the exact nature of which largely defies definition. [Thomas Jefferson: Prof Fawn Brody]

Jupiter lived five years less than Hercules his father --- suggesting that death was both premature and unexpected.  Research is needed to better attempt at understanding the type illnesses that many slaves died from.

"Several months before his election his slave Jupiter, exactly his own age, who had attended him like a shadow at William and Mary, and who had for years served as his coachman, died after nine days of suffering.  Martha blamed it on medicine prescribed by a black doctor; Jefferson, however, wrote his son-in-law that he feared it came from Jupiter's insistence on accompanying him part way to Philadelphia.  Knowing he was ailing, Jefferson said, he had "engaged Davy Bowles," but "Jupiter was so much disturbed at this that I yielded."  He death, Jefferson continued sadly, "leaves void in my administration which I cannot fill up."  James Hemings died in 1801.  All we know is that Jefferson wrote to Thomas Mann Randolph of his "tragical end." [Thomas Jefferson: Prof. Fawn Brody]

Note:  TJ Farmbook reflects Fanny as plantation mate/unofficial wife of Gill --- a father without authority over her or offspring. Relationship was likely as good as allowable under plantation slavery wherein fertile mothers were highly valued and functioned as matriarchs responsible to the patriarch/slave owner as their earthly lord, master and provider.

TJ listed her as a spinner in the 1800 inventory suggesting that she no longer worked in the fields.

Note: TJ gave 11-12 year old Patty to Mrs. Harris in 1777.  Possibility that she was Mary Elizabeth (Betsey) Dabney of Albemarle who married Daniel Maupin of Albemarle in 1755 but had apparently married Christopher Harris of Hanover, Virginia in 1745; and with family ties in Goochland.  Another possibility exists that it was Mrs. Mary Harris, White wife of a Black loyalist evacuated from American colonies and lived with wife as a prospective colonist in London enroute to Sierre Leone around 1787.  Sources: http://www.familysearch.com/   and The Loyal Blacks (page 142) by Ellen Gibson Wilson, 1977.

Note: TJ notes on page 22 that Frank was the wife of Mingo at Elk Hill suggesting that her movement to Monticello had separated her from him, and the likely realization of loneliness and despair possibly leading to illness and death by a childless women among non-family members.  Assumptions are that TJ would also have considered such effects after the fact.

Note:  Shipping records for the period preceding birth of Betty Hemings indicates that her mother was likely imported from Jamaica to Williamsburg; and, initials of the ship owner and captain can be decoded from those records.  Also, Betty Hemings and her children were apparently relocated from the Forest Plantation home of John Wayles, after his death, --- to his nearby Guinea plantation, and then to the Elk Hill plantation after TJ assumed ownership.

Note:  TJ noted Daniel as the grandson of Betty Hemings.  Assumptions are that his mother was Mary, and the possibility of JW or one of the male slaves at Wingo Plantation as the father of Daniel. It is also possible that Daniel was the son of Martin Hemings and unknown mother studded by him.  It is evident that John Wayles the slave trader was a slave breeder after the import from Caribbean was banned by British government in 1733-1734 time frame.
