                Finney-Frog-Hill Patriots

A lot of African-American young men and several classified as White served in the Union Army with the name of William Hill during the Civil War, .... so many in fact that further research is required to determine which William Hill or Hills were in Union regiments that moved through southwest Virginia.  We are inclined to believe the William Hill that met, promised and eventually returned to marry Gillie Frog was likely in the Union Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry forces that pushed the confederates down into the mountains of western North Carolina.

We are also of the opinion that in pursuit of goodness in love, it is possible that William Hill born in Ohio in year 1840 may have used his personal liberty to marry and live with Gilly Frog, met and loved somewhere in the hills above Salem, Virginia where he was sufficiently wealthy and wise enough to buy a farm still in existence as of the 1880 census. 

The story matters because so many descendents of Easter Frog and Gilly Finney are interested in trying to understand their heritage in which love overcame adversities.  The facts that so many Hill offspring in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and even New Jersey held and used the inherited names of Henry and William is consistent with what has been seen and heard by multiple Hill generations up from slavery.
