Sarah Robinson, born abt 1880

Stephen Martin was born in Ridgeway of Henry County Virginia, and likely descended from the coerced breeding of at least nine (9) offspring by Amy Martin, born abt 1800. It ought to be kept in mind there were many Martins inter-married with Native Americans in Henry County, and many went to work in the coal mines of western Virginia and West Virginia.

Our view is that Sarah, born in 1880 would have been able to marry Stephen Martin sometime after year 1900 when he was old enough and skilled as a coal miner with cash income sufficient to support a family.  They apparently married long enough for Lewis to be apprenticed as a coal miner before World War I and possibly by time of the 1910 census.

We are inclined to believe both Stephen and son Lewis lived and worked in McDowell County coal mines because point #1 the widespread dangers in those mines made labor shortages of White miners a problem that encouraged recruitment of Black miners.  The second reason for our conclusion is that Lewis apparently registered for 1917-1918 selective service draft in McDowell County.

McDowell County Mine Disasters

Since the first coal mining in the 1800's, McDowell County, located in the southern part of West Virginia, has suffered more mine disasters than any county in the state. These disasters, mostly mine explosions, accounted for over 500 fatalities from 1902 to 1964.
