Emma Lowry, born abt 1814          mother

Emma Wilkerson, born abt 1846 was the freeborn daughter of Emma, a Cherokee woman and William Lockett Wilkerson.

In 1867, Emma Wilkerson gave birth to her first-child Ida Lowry and second daughter Georgella Lowry in 1869.  We believe both girls were fathered by John D. Lowry.   The 1880 census indicates Emma as a niece to either William or his wife Charlotte we assume was a Lowry or Wilkerson.  We have not been able to identify origin or source of the surname Watkins, and speculate that she may have been married for a short while to one of the U.S. Colored Troops named Watkins and killed in the fighting that raged

Image below helps support theory that Emma Wilkerson the known mother of Ida Wilkerson was not a slave and quite possibly of European and/or native American heritage.  Family history does not include any reference to her being married.

Ida Wilkerson, a cousin to Lee Lowry was born abt.1866 in Bedford County, VA. the daughter of Emma Lowry and a sibling or cousin to Civil War participants listed above and below. The missing items of information needed include her and their parents, locations, etc.  Ida married Lee Lowry around 1896.  Indicators are that most or many of Wilkerson offspring before and during the Civil War migrated to West Virginia.
