Robert Hemings was allowed by Thomas Jefferson on Christmas eve, 1794 and apparently lived and loved with his wife in Richmond, Virginia; ... and maintained a friendship with his childhood friend and cousin Martha, Jefferson's daughter.  The possibility exists that James W. Hemings and William C. Hemings who served in Confederate Virginia Militia during the Civil War were his grandsons, ... about the same ages as James and William Hemings who were the sons of Madison Hemings.

There is little doubt that if his wife Dolly was also of half White or three-quarters White heritage as he was, ... their offspring would have been easily assimilated as White and able to live in Virginia without special approval by the Legislature and annual registration with the Superior Court in Richmond.
