"Virginia, Deaths and Burials, 1853-1912," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X5TR-BF3 : accessed 21 February 2015), J. Bannister, 24 Sep 1857; citing Botetourt Co., Virginia, reference it 3 p 108 ln 33; FHL microfilm 2,056,974. So far as we have been able to determine, James Bannister below is the only person found so far who might have been the father of Nancy Lee Banister, born abt 1825 via her mother Rose (Carter) Lee, born 1788). Additional research is necessary to determine if J. Bannister below was a property to and/or freed by the Bannister plantations in and around Petersburg, Virginia. We welcome any input that might be provided by descendents of Colonel John Banister. We are seeking to determine if and where James Banister, father of our ancestor Nancy Lee Banister may have encountered her mother Rose Lee (Carter) around 1824-1825. We understand that it was a common practice, acceptable by law, that freed slaves adapt the surname of their former owners in order to be registered and listed as free colored/Negroes. |
