Volume #:10

Life for William was especially tough in efforts to earn a living doing what he was good at, but his persistence did land him a career job working in the U.S. postal services.

It is difficult for most unenlightened African-Americans to comprehend that prior to the Kennedy era of power in American life, it was rare if not impossible for "the least of us" to gain secure employment in most aspects of the economy.  Military services, postal workers, and railway sleeping car porters were among the best job opportunities.  And, almost without exception on any given day the doctrine held dear was that of working harder, longer hours and out-performing White peers in sight and newly hired.

For William Lee and his brother-in-law among other African-American postal workers the daily challenge was not simply to keep their jobs but how to keep their families intact and secure and faithful in them.
