| Harriet Hemings Jefferson was born in 1801 to Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson, and allowed to leave Monticello as a White woman about the same time as her brother Beverly left, and it can be assumed the two of them went to Washington City per Madison Hemings comments. Our view is that by year 1820, the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. was filled by hundreds if not thousands of ex-slaves and offspring of freed slaves who easily passed for White when choosing to do so. It was perhaps the beginning abolitionist movement as people of African heritage secretly and sometimes openly among certain people, ... crossed the color bar to live, work, travel and even vote as Whites.
